About this webcam

The Monte Hermoso Webcam looks east along the Costanera, the beachfront avenue of Monte Hermoso, a seaside town in the south of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. From a high point at the corner of Calle Patagonia, the frame takes in a curving road and crosswalk in the foreground, a wedge of lawn with paved paths on the left, and a gray wooden boardwalk with railings stepping down toward the sand on the right. Beyond it, a wide beach runs off toward the horizon beside the Atlantic, with several lines of white surf breaking across the shallows and apartment blocks lining the avenue. Out of season the traffic is a few walkers on the sand and the odd car on the Costanera. In January and February, when the town fills with summer visitors, the same beach can disappear under umbrellas.

About Monte Hermoso

Monte Hermoso sits on the Atlantic coast about 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of the port city of Bahia Blanca, and its shoreline runs almost exactly east to west, so the beach faces south. That orientation gives the town and its neighbor Pehuen Co something rare on Argentina’s Atlantic coast: in summer the sun both rises and sets over the sea. The beach stretches for more than 32 kilometers (20 miles), backed by a chain of dunes, and the 2022 census counted 8,821 residents.

The resort grew out of a ranch. In 1879 Esteban Dufaur bought 4,000 hectares (about 10,000 acres) of land beside the sea, his son Sulpicio set up an estancia there in 1910, and the first hotel opened in 1918. The settlement was only formally established as a town in 1975, and it is still known above all as a family beach resort.

About 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) east of the camera, on the coast road toward Sauce Grande, stands the Recalada a Bahia Blanca lighthouse, known locally as Faro Recalada. The metal lattice tower is 67 meters (220 feet) tall, the tallest lighthouse in South America, and it was first lit on 1 January 1906 to guide ships toward the port of Bahia Blanca. It was prefabricated in France by the same company that built the Eiffel Tower.

Weather and Climate in Monte Hermoso

Summer runs from December to February, with afternoon highs of about 26 to 28 C (79 to 82 F) and nights around 16 to 18 C (61 to 64 F). Around the December solstice the town gets close to 15 hours of daylight, and this is when the beach on camera is at its fullest. Autumn cools quickly. April averages highs near 20 C (69 F), May about 16 C (61 F), and April is one of the wetter months of the year.

Winter is cool rather than cold, with highs of 12 to 15 C (54 to 58 F), lows of 5 to 7 C (41 to 44 F) and about 9.5 hours of daylight in late June. June and July are the driest months, at around 30 millimeters (1.2 inches) of rain each, and the frame is often down to an empty beach and a quiet avenue. On an overcast afternoon the sky and sea turn the same gray and the surf shows up as bands of white across the shallows. Spring warms from about 17 C (62 F) in September to 23 C (74 F) in November, which is also the wettest month. Rainfall totals roughly 590 millimeters (23 inches) a year.

Things to Do Near Monte Hermoso

Faro Recalada is the obvious first stop. The tower is open to visitors, and its 331 steps lead to a view over the dunes and the long curve of the coast. Inland, Laguna Sauce Grande lies about 10 kilometers (6 miles) northwest of the town center, a broad lagoon within the same municipality and a change of scene from the beach.

The coast between Monte Hermoso and Pehuen Co, about 23 kilometers (14 miles) to the west, is protected as the Pehuen Co-Monte Hermoso Geological, Paleontological and Archaeological Reserve. Footprints of extinct Ice Age animals, among them the giant ground sloth Megatherium and armored glyptodonts, are spread along about 3 kilometers (2 miles) of beach. Near Monte Hermoso, the archaeological site known as Monte Hermoso 1 preserves human footprints about 7,000 years old, pressed into the mud of an old brackish marsh. The reserve was added to Argentina’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2012, and the Vicente Di Martino science museum in town runs guided tours that explain the finds.
