About this webcam

The Costa Teguise Webcam looks out from the terrace of the Beach Bar on Calle Las Olas, in the seaside resort of Costa Teguise on the east coast of Lanzarote. Cafe tables and a red parasol fill the foreground. Beyond a glass screen, a paved promenade marked with a dashed white line curves away between low walls of dark lava stone, past palm trees and a white building signed Surfwings. To the right, rows of sunbeds under straw parasols line the back of Playa de las Cucharas, the largest beach in the resort. Early in the morning the terrace and sunbeds are often empty. By late morning walkers stream along the promenade, sunbathers spread out on the sand and the tables fill.

About Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise is a purpose-built resort about 7 kilometers (4 miles) northeast of central Arrecife, the island capital, in a straight line. It belongs to the municipality of Teguise. Building began in 1970, after the company Explosivos Rio Tinto, then led by Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, who later became prime minister of Spain, bought 12 million square meters (about 4.6 square miles) of coastal land. The first project was the Gran Melia Salinas, the first five-star hotel on Lanzarote, designed by the architect Fernando Higueras with the collaboration of the local artist Cesar Manrique. Its population grew from 2,299 in 2000 to 8,306 in 2018.

Four main beaches line the resort. Playa de las Cucharas, the one on this camera, is the biggest: a 640 meter (2,100 foot) stretch of sand sheltered by rock breakwaters and backed by gardens and a promenade of bars and shops. It is also the resort’s windsurfing beach. Playa de los Charcos, with white sand, almost joins it to the northeast. Playa del Jablillo, the smallest and quietest, and Playa Bastian, where white sand mixes with small volcanic stones, lie to the south and southwest.

The Costa Teguise Webcam is fixed rather than panning, so the frame holds the same stretch of seafront all day. The water’s edge sits just out of shot beyond the sunbeds, which makes this a view of beach life more than of the sea.

Weather and Climate in Costa Teguise

The climate is mild and very dry. At Lanzarote Airport, about 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of the resort, the Spanish weather agency AEMET records average highs of 20.9°C (69.6°F) in January, with lows around 14°C (57°F). April averages 23.8°C (74.8°F) by day and 16.1°C (61°F) at night. August is the warmest month, at 29.5°C (85.1°F) by day and 21.5°C (70.7°F) after dark, and the airport’s record high, set in August, is 43.6°C (110.5°F). Autumn stays warm, with October averaging 27.0°C (80.6°F).

Rain is scarce. The airport averages about 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) a year, and most of it falls in the cooler months: December, the wettest, averages 21.4 millimeters (0.8 inches), while July averages none at all. Sunshine adds up to about 3,090 hours a year, so dry ground and bright frames are the norm on camera. Model data puts the sea at about 19°C (66°F) in February and March, rising to about 23°C (73°F) in August.

Things to Do Near Costa Teguise

From the bar it is a short walk to the resort’s other beaches: Playa de los Charcos lies just beyond Las Cucharas to the northeast, and the smaller Playa del Jablillo is about 470 meters (1,540 feet) to the south. Several windsurfing and diving schools work from Las Cucharas itself. Plaza Pueblo Marinero, roughly 250 meters (820 feet) west of the bar, is a pedestrian square lined with restaurants and bars. Inland, Costa Teguise Golf was designed by John Harris and built in the late 1970s, with black volcanic gravel, known locally as picon, worked into the course. Aquapark Costa Teguise is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) west of the bar.

Further afield, the Jardin de Cactus at Guatiza, about 9 kilometers (6 miles) north, was Cesar Manrique’s last project. It opened in 1991 in an old quarry where volcanic grit was once dug out to spread on the fields, and it holds about 4,500 plants of 450 species of cactus and succulents. Timanfaya National Park, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west, was declared in 1974 and covers 51 square kilometers (19.7 square miles) of lava fields and craters, most of them shaped by the eruptions of 1730 to 1736. It is the only national park in Spain made up entirely of geological features, and Manrique’s El Diablo figure is its emblem. The inland village of Teguise, which gives the municipality its name, is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) northwest.
