About this webcam

The Hurghada Webcam looks out from the James & Mac dive base over the beach of the Giftun Azur Resort, on Egypt’s Red Sea coast south of the city center. Rows of thatched parasols and sun loungers draped in turquoise towels fill the middle of the frame, fenced into small bays by woven reed screens and shaded by tall palms. Beyond them a jetty runs out over the water on the left, white yachts and day boats ride at anchor, and a pale turquoise strip of shallow water gives way to deep blue sea. A sandy path crosses the foreground, so guests on their way to the beach walk right through the shot. A second camera inside the dive base shows the shaded seating area where divers pull on wetsuits and lay out fins before the boats leave.

About Hurghada and the Giftun Azur Beach

James & Mac Diving Center works from inside the Giftun Azur Resort, and it has been under the same German management since 1987. Its own fleet of boats moors at the hotel’s jetty, the one in this camera’s view, and every dive trip starts from there. From this stretch of coast the boats reach more than 50 dive sites to the north and south of Hurghada. The center lists 12 PADI instructors and teaches in English, German and Arabic.

The resort sits in the Touristic Villages, the long line of hotels on Youssef Afifi Road south of the city center. Hurghada International Airport is only 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west of the beach, while Marina Hurghada and the port lie about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) to the north. Ababda fishermen settled this shore in the late 19th century, and Hurghada was officially established in 1905. It has since grown into a city of 214,247 people (2023), with the El Dahar and Sakkala districts to the north and resort hotels lining the coast to the south.

Offshore, the Giftun Islands form a protected area that many of the city’s dive and snorkel boats head for. The nearest shore of Big Giftun lies about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) northeast of this beach, and El Mahmya, the protected beach on Giftun, is a regular stop on boat trips from Hurghada.

Weather and Climate in Hurghada

Rain is close to nonexistent here. An average year brings just 7.9 millimeters (0.3 inches) of it, against about 3,530 hours of sunshine. Winter days are warm rather than hot: January averages a high of 22 C (72 F) and a low of 12 C (53 F), and the sea cools to 21 to 22 C (70 to 72 F). Spring heats up fast, with April highs near 30 C (86 F). July is the peak, at 37 C (99 F) by day and 28 C (82 F) at night, with the sea at 27 to 28 C (81 to 82 F). October still reaches 32 C (90 F), with lows around 22 C (72 F).

Those numbers show plainly on the camera. Blue skies are the rule in every season, so the main changes are how full the beach gets and how the light falls. Summer middays tend to bring hard, flat light and busy rows of loungers, while winter afternoons are softer, with longer palm shadows stretching across the path. The water shifts with the sun too, from pale turquoise over the shallows to dark blue farther out, and on calm days the boats at anchor barely move.

Things to Do Near Hurghada

Diving is the obvious choice from this beach. James & Mac runs PADI courses and boat dives from the jetty in the frame, and the Giftun Islands are the classic snorkel trip, with boats from Hurghada calling at El Mahmya. For marine life without getting wet, the Hurghada Grand Aquarium, opened in 2015, is about 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) south of the resort.

North along the coast, Marina Hurghada, about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) away, is where yachts moor beside a promenade of shops and restaurants. Just past it, next to the port, stands El Mina Mosque, the largest mosque in the city. Closer to the resort, the Hurghada Museum is 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) south of the beach, a short taxi ride for an afternoon out of the sun.
