About this webcam

The Kamiensk Webcam looks out from high above the center of Kamiensk, a small town in the Lodz Voivodeship of central Poland. In the main view, the gray roof and slender bell turret of a church fill the bottom of the frame. Beyond them come red and brown rooftops, gardens and trees, a dark band of forest, and flat farmland running out to a low horizon. Two more cameras from the same operator sit in the player’s tabs. One looks across the town center and its main road toward a long, flat-topped hill on the skyline, and the other follows a residential street out to the fields. The scene shifts with the farming year, from bare plowland in early spring to green crops in summer and stubble after the harvest.

About Kamiensk

Kamiensk sits on the small Kamionka River in Radomsko County, about 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of Radomsko and 63 kilometers (39 miles) south of Lodz in a straight line. Poland’s statistics office counted 2,599 residents at the end of 2023, living on 11.99 square kilometers (4.63 square miles). The A1 motorway runs along the eastern edge of town, National Road 91 and Regional Road 484 cross the center, and the railway between Warsaw and Upper Silesia passes through, with a station in town.

The settlement was first recorded in 1291 and received its town charter in 1374. It lost that status in 1870 and spent more than a century as a village, regaining town rights only in 1994. Before the Second World War, Kamiensk had a large Jewish community. A count from 1900 recorded 1,064 Christians and 787 Jews, and the town had three synagogues. That community was destroyed in the Holocaust.

The parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built between 1899 and 1903, stands on Plac Wolnosci and is a listed historic monument. The market square holds a monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko that survived the bombing of 1939. West of town, Gora Kamiensk (Kamiensk Hill) rises out of the plain. It is not a natural hill but a spoil heap, built from about 1.4 billion cubic meters (49 billion cubic feet) of overburden dug out of the Belchatow lignite mine. Its summit, usually given as 386 meters (1,266 feet) above sea level, lies about 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) west of the town center.

Weather and Climate in Kamiensk

Winters here are cold and often gray. Over the ten years from 2015 to 2024, January averaged highs of about 2 C (35 F) and lows of about -3 C (26 F), and in December the sun is up for less than eight hours a day. After snow, the fields in the main view can turn white all the way to the horizon, while overcast days flatten the scene into bands of gray field and dark forest. Spring warms steadily, with April afternoons averaging about 14 C (57 F) and May about 19 C (66 F), and the plowed land turns green as the crops come up.

Summers are warm rather than hot. July and August highs average about 25 C (77 F), with nights near 15 C (59 F), and this is also the wettest part of the year. August brings about 79 millimeters (3.1 inches) of rain in a typical year, against roughly 680 millimeters (27 inches) over the whole year. Around midsummer the sun is up for more than 16 hours, so the cameras show daylight well into the evening. By October highs fall back to about 14 C (57 F), the trees around the church turn yellow and brown, and the harvested fields go back to bare soil.

Things to Do Near Kamiensk

The main attraction is Gora Kamiensk itself. Its sports and recreation center, on the northeastern slope at Ozga, runs lift-served skiing on a main run about 760 meters (2,493 feet) long and 30 to 150 meters (98 to 492 feet) wide, with a snow park of jumps partway down. That is rare terrain for a part of Poland this flat. When the snow is gone, the hill switches to a gravity toboggan run, two downhill routes for mountain bikers, a quad track, a summer karting track and a climbing wall. Three marked cycling routes of different difficulty cover the area, a wind farm stands on the summit, and the top gives a wide panorama over the surrounding countryside.

Back in town, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the Kosciuszko monument on the market square are the two landmarks to look for. Further out, Radomsko lies about 16 kilometers (10 miles) to the south, Belchatow about 19 kilometers (12 miles) to the northwest, and Piotrkow Trybunalski about 27 kilometers (17 miles) to the northeast.
