About this webcam

The Zakliczyn Webcam looks down on the market square of Zakliczyn, a small town on the Dunajec River in southern Poland, with the arcaded town hall in the middle of the frame. Rows of parked cars fill the paved square in front of it, townhouses with red roofs line the edges, and a church tower rises above the rooftops on the right. Wooded foothills run along the horizon behind the town. The camera is one of three that the local internet provider KM-NET keeps on the square, and the other two angles sit in the tabs above the player. The view changes through the day as cars come and go, stalls go up under white awnings at the edge of the square, and the light moves across the front of the town hall.

About Zakliczyn

Zakliczyn sits on the right bank of the Dunajec in Tarnow County, Lesser Poland. The town itself lies at 206 to 250 meters (676 to 820 feet) above sea level, while the wooded hills around it climb to 503 meters (1,650 feet). It is a small place, with 1,579 residents on 1 January 2024 and an area of 4.02 square kilometers (1.55 square miles), yet its market square measures 100 by 170 meters (328 by 558 feet), one of the largest in the province. That size is what fills most of the frame. The town hall in the middle dates from the early 19th century and has been restored, with rows of tenement houses on the eastern and southern sides and two-story buildings on the others.

The town was planned from scratch. On 17 July 1557, King Sigismund II Augustus granted Spytek Wawrzyniec Jordan, owner of Melsztyn Castle, the right to found a town under Magdeburg law on the land of the village of Opatkowice. The founding charter followed on 13 June 1558, and the new town took the name of Zakliczyn near Myslenice, the old seat of the Jordan family. It lost its town charter in 1934 and spent more than seventy years as a village before regaining town status on 1 January 2006.

KM-NET, the internet provider behind the Zakliczyn Webcam, has its office in the town and runs a network of cameras across the surrounding villages, from village churches and a stork nest to the view from Melsztyn Castle. The three square cameras show the town hall face on, a wider rooftop view with wooden market pavilions and a street of townhouses leading away, and a lower view across the cobbles where stalls often set up.

Weather and Climate in Zakliczyn

The nearest long-term weather station is in Tarnow, about 25 kilometers (16 miles) to the northeast, and Tarnow has the highest long-term mean annual temperature of any place in Poland. Its 1991 to 2020 averages put January highs at 2.1 C (36 F) and lows at minus 4 C (25 F), so the camera can show frost on the parked cars and snow on the roofs through the winter. Spring warms quickly: April averages 15.5 C (60 F) by day and 4.3 C (40 F) at night, and the trees beside the town hall leaf out over the following weeks.

Summer is long by Polish standards, running from mid-May to mid-September, with July highs of 25.6 C (78 F) and lows of 13.9 C (57 F). July is also the wettest month, with 107 millimeters (4.2 inches) of an annual 713 millimeters (28 inches). October brings highs of 14.4 C (58 F) and lows of 5.4 C (42 F), when the leaves on the trees beside the town hall start to turn yellow.

Things to Do Near Zakliczyn

The square makes a good starting point for a walk. The Franciscan monastery, built between the mid-17th and 19th centuries, keeps its Church of the Mother of God from 1645 to 1651, and the parish Church of Saint Aegidius dates from 1739 to 1768. Two military cemeteries from the First World War, numbers 293 and 294, were laid out in 1915 and 1916, and a few wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries still stand in the streets off the square.

Luslawice, 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) southwest of town, is home to the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music, which the composer opened in 2013 with a 650-seat concert hall and rooms for master classes. Penderecki also planted an arboretum of around 2,000 kinds of trees and shrubs in a 30-hectare (74-acre) park near his residence there. Across the Dunajec in Melsztyn, the castle begun in 1347 by Spycimir, castellan of Krakow, burned in 1771 during the Bar Confederation. Restoration work in 2022 and 2023 put a roof back on its residential tower, and the site is open free of charge at any time.
