About this webcam
The Tegoborze Webcam looks over the centre of Tegoborze, a village of 1,685 people on the southwestern shore of Lake Roznow in southern Poland. From a high point beside the village school, the frame takes in a green school building with solar panels on its red roof, an artificial grass pitch, red all-weather courts, a long sports hall and a car park lined up beside the village street. A tall spruce stands in the middle of the picture. Beyond the rooftops on the right, a band of Lake Roznow lies below wooded hills patched with fields and scattered farmhouses. The scene follows the rhythm of a school day, with cars pulling in and pupils crossing the yard, and it follows the seasons too: in mid October the broadleaf woods on the hills turn yellow and rust while the spruce stays dark green.
About Tegoborze
Tegoborze belongs to the rural municipality of Lososina Dolna in Nowy Sacz County, in the Lesser Poland region. It lies about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of the Nowy Sacz market square in a straight line, and national road 75 runs through the village on its way between the two. The population was 1,559 at the 2011 census and had grown to 1,685 by 2021. Written records mention the village as early as 1325.
The lake on the right of the frame is a reservoir. A dam on the Dunajec River at Roznow, built between 1935 and 1941, created Lake Roznow, which covers 16 square kilometers (6.2 square miles), stretches 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) along a winding S-shaped course and reaches depths of 30 to 35 meters (98 to 115 feet). Its surface sits at 265 meters (869 feet) above sea level and it holds 167 million cubic meters of water. Tegoborze faces the southern end of its widest stretch, known locally as Szerokie Ploso. The lake turned the village toward tourism.
The hills behind the village have their own history. From 1933 until the war, and again for a few years after it, a gliding school flew from the slopes of Rachow and Jodlowiec Wielki, a hill of 482 meters (1,581 feet). The village also has a single storey classicist manor with a four column portico, built around the start of the 19th century and linked to the Stadnicki family. In 1893 a seance held there produced what Poles know as the Tegoborze Prophecy. On the hill of St. Just stands a historic wooden church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, on the spot where tradition places the hermitage of a monk named Just around the year 900. A monument in the village centre remembers those who died fighting the German occupation, which ended here with the liberation on 18 January 1945.
Weather and Climate in Tegoborze
The nearest long running weather station is in Nowy Sacz, at 281 meters (922 feet), and its 1991 to 2020 averages fit Tegoborze closely. January is the coldest month, with highs around 2 C (36 F) and lows near minus 5 C (23 F), so snow can whiten the pitches, the roofs and the hills. Spring warms quickly: April averages highs of 15 C (60 F) and lows of 4 C (38 F). July brings highs around 25 C (78 F) and mild nights near 13 C (56 F). Around 728 millimeters (28.6 inches) of rain and snow fall in a typical year.
Autumn is often the most colourful time on the camera. October highs still reach about 15 C (59 F) with lows near 5 C (41 F), and the mixed woods on the slopes above the lake change colour week by week. On grey days haze can soften the far hills and flatten the lake to a pale strip, while the short days of December can leave the street under its lamps by late afternoon.
Things to Do Near Tegoborze
Lake Roznow itself is the main draw. Resorts along its shore at Grodek nad Dunajcem, Zbyszyce, Bartkowa and Roznow offer guesthouses, cafes and places to get down to the water. At Roznow, the Gothic ruins of the Upper Castle, also called Zawisza Czarny’s Castle, stand on a steep wooded slope above the Dunajec near the road to the dam. The castle dates from the 13th century and once guarded the trade route to Hungary. In the centre of Roznow, the Lower Castle is an unfinished bastion fortress, one of the first modern defensive works in Poland, where only one of four planned bastions was ever built. Roznow lies about 6 kilometers (4 miles) north of Tegoborze as the crow flies.
Walkers have marked routes close at hand. A blue trail links Roznow with Jaworz, a summit of 921 meters (3,022 feet), and a green trail climbs to Bialowodzka Gora at 607 meters (1,991 feet). Chelm, at 790 meters (2,592 feet), rises nearby. In the village, the wooden church on St. Just hill and First World War Cemetery No. 353 are both worth a short detour. Nowy Sacz and its old town market square lie a short drive south along road 75.
