Usti nad Orlici Webcam – East Bohemia’s Rooftop Stork Nest

The Usti nad Orlici Webcam looks straight down into a white stork nest on a flat roof in Hylvaty, a district of Usti nad Orlici in the eastern Czech Republic. The nest is a wide ring of sticks that fills most of the frame, with roof skylights to the right and a yard of workshops, solar-panelled buildings, parked cars and wooded hills behind it. From spring until August it belongs to a pair the locals call Ursula and Ulrich, and a nesting season can bring nest repairs, eggs, chicks and young storks testing their wings on the rim. Once the birds leave, the nest stands empty until they return, and by October grass grows in its center. The current broadcast has been live since November 2025.

Usti nad Orlici is a town of 13,988 people (January 2026) in the Pardubice Region, about 44 kilometers (27 miles) east of Pardubice. It lies at 340 meters (1,120 feet) where the Trebovka and Ticha Orlice rivers meet. The town was first mentioned in 1285, when King Wenceslaus II gave it to Zavis of Falkenstein, and its old German name was Wildenschwert. Textiles made its fortune: Jan Hernych founded the first textile factory here in 1855, and in 1967 the world’s first spinnerless spinning mill started work in the town.

She was first recorded here in 2018, and since storks usually start breeding at about four years old, this was very likely her first nest. The male, Ulrich, carries no ring, so his age and origin are unknown. The way the two greet each other each spring makes it almost certain they have nested together since at least 2020.

Winters are cold and often grey. From 2015 to 2024, January averaged a high of about 2 C (35 F) and a low of -3 C (26 F), and snow can settle on the empty nest and the roofs around it. Spring warms quickly, with April highs near 13 C (56 F). Czech storks usually arrive between mid-March and mid-April, and in recent years many have returned earlier than they used to.

The town’s main square, Mirove namesti, has a Marian column from 1737 and a Baroque town hall built between 1721 and 1723.
