Lomnice nad Popelkou lies at 478 meters (1,568 feet) in Semily District, about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southeast of Semily and 33 kilometers (21 miles) southeast of Liberec, on the border between Bohemian Paradise and the foothills of the Giant Mountains. The town’s first written mention dates from 1242. It covers 25.57 square kilometers (9.87 square miles) and had 5,649 residents at the start of 2026. Tabor, its highest point at 678 meters (2,224 feet), rises about 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) south of the square.

The town hall was built in 1864 and received its neo-Gothic facade in 1903. Its clock tower carries a weather vane, and a Baroque town coat of arms from 1817 sits on the stone front.
