Otrokovice Webcam – See Daily Life on a Czech Town Square

The Otrokovice Webcam looks down on Namesti 3. kvetna (3 May Square), the main square of this industrial town in the Zlin Region of the Czech Republic. From a rooftop on the northwest side of the square, the camera faces roughly southeast over a paved plaza lined with young trees and lamp posts hung with flower baskets. A large car park fills the lower right, and behind it stands the Otrokovice Beseda, the town’s cultural center, with a Billa supermarket on the side facing the lens. Route 55 crosses the middle of the frame past a bus shelter, and beyond the road the tall bell tower of St. Vojtech church rises above the trees on the left. Red roofs, apartment blocks and a line of low hills close off the horizon. On weekday mornings the car park can be close to full, and in October the trees on the plaza turn yellow.

About Otrokovice

Otrokovice sits 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southwest of Zlin, where the Drevnice river flows into the Morava, at about 190 meters (623 feet) above sea level. The town covers 19.6 square kilometers (7.6 square miles) and had 17,401 residents in 2025. Its modern shape comes from the Bata shoe company, which chose Otrokovice for a branch factory in 1930. Building of the new workers’ district began that September to an urban plan by Frantisek Lydie Gahura, and the first eight factory buildings went up in 1931. The town was officially renamed Batov in 1939 and got its old name back in 1946.

The company’s story has a darker page here too. In July 1932 Tomas Bata, head of the firm, was killed when his plane crashed shortly after taking off from the Otrokovice airfield. Industry still drives the town, which is home to the Continental Barum tire plant and the aircraft maker Moravan. The Bata Canal also starts here. Work on it began on 16 October 1934 and finished in autumn 1938, mainly so that lignite from the mine at Ratiskovice could be shipped to the Otrokovice power plant, and its northern end was a port inside the factory grounds.

The town hall, the police station and two churches all stand within a short walk of the square. St. Vojtech, the modern church with the tall tower on the left of the frame, was built in 1995 on a commanding spot on the square. The Beseda on the right is the town’s congress and cultural center.

Weather and Climate in Otrokovice

Otrokovice has a central European climate with cold winters and warm summers. Over the ten years from 2016 to 2025, January averaged highs of about 3°C (37°F) and lows of minus 3°C (27°F), and average lows stay below freezing from December to February, so frosty mornings are normal in winter. Spring warms quickly. April highs average 15°C (59°F) and May highs 19°C (66°F), when the trees on the plaza come into leaf.

Summer is both the warmest and the wettest season. July and August highs average about 26°C (79°F), with lows near 16°C (60°F), and August is the wettest month at roughly 95 millimeters (3.7 inches) of rain. September stays mild at 21°C (70°F), October highs drop to 15°C (59°F), and by November they are down to 8°C (47°F). The town gets about 730 millimeters (29 inches) of precipitation a year, most of it between May and September.

Things to Do Near Otrokovice

The Bata Canal is the best-known outing in the area. It runs 51.8 kilometers (32.2 miles) from Otrokovice down the Morava valley, partly on the Morava and Drevnice rivers and partly in its own channel, through 13 working locks, and it reopened to sightseeing boats in 1995. For a swim, the Sterkoviste recreation area on tr. Tomase Bati fills an old gravel pit that was worked through the 1940s and 1950s until 1957. The 13 hectare (32 acre) lake has a grassy beach with piers, pedal boat and paddleboard hire, sports courts and a 2 kilometer (1.2 mile) path around the water, and anglers can fish there with a license.

Zlin, 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) up the Drevnice valley, is the Bata company’s home town. Its landmark is Bata’s Skyscraper, also called Building 21, a 77.5 meter (254 foot), 16 floor office tower designed by Vladimir Karfik and built from 1936 to 1938, with the company director’s office set inside a lift. Zoo Zlin occupies the grounds of Lesna chateau on the edge of the city. About 15 kilometers (9 miles) northwest of Otrokovice, Kromeriz has the Archbishop’s Chateau and its gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
