About this webcam

The Ceske Petrovice Webcam looks down a ski run at Sportareal Ceske Petrovice, a small family ski area on the edge of the Eagle Mountains (Orlicke hory) in the northeast of the Czech Republic. From the top station of a drag lift, the camera follows the lift line down a long, open slope to the red-roofed base buildings, then carries on over the village of Ceske Petrovice to a patchwork of fields and wooded ridges. Yellow snow guns stand on the run between seasons. The view changes with the calendar more than with the hour: green pasture from spring to autumn, machine-made snow from about mid-December, and a white valley when a proper cold spell arrives.

About Ceske Petrovice

Ceske Petrovice is a village in the Usti nad Orlici District of the Pardubice Region, close to the border with Poland. It sits at about 645 meters (2,116 feet) and covers 6.3 square kilometers (2.4 square miles). The first written mention dates from 1601, and its old German name was Bohmisch Petersdorf. Like many villages in this borderland it has shrunk a long way: 869 people lived here in 1869, and fewer than 160 do today. The nearest town is Zamberk, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) to the west.

Sportareal Ceske Petrovice runs three Poma drag lifts of 600, 500 and 380 meters (1,969, 1,640 and 1,247 feet), plus two rope tows for the smallest skiers, serving four runs. The slopes lie between roughly 650 and 750 meters (2,133 and 2,461 feet) and face north, which helps them hold snow. Three of the runs have snowmaking, two are floodlit for night skiing, and one is set up as a snow park with jumps and obstacles. The resort pitches itself at families with children, recreational skiers and beginners, and it runs a ski school and a children’s practice area.

The main view on the Ceske Petrovice Webcam, which the resort labels Top Station B, points down the lift line. Spruce trees fill the left edge, and farmhouses, barns and field boundaries spread across the right half of the frame. The second tab, Bottom Station A, uses a wide fisheye lens from a rooftop at the base: a curved wooden boardwalk crosses the foreground and the lift cable climbs toward the trees on the crest. The resort also streams its children’s ski park, but that feed was off air when this page was written.

Weather and Climate in Ceske Petrovice

Winters at the ski area’s height are properly cold. Ten-year averages put January highs around -1 C (31 F) and lows near -5 C (22 F), with December and February only a degree or two milder. Roughly 75 to 80 millimeters (3 inches) of precipitation falls in each winter month, much of it as snow, but snowmaking lets the resort open from about mid-December and keep skiing until the end of March. The sun sets before 4 pm local time in December. On the Ceske Petrovice Webcam, winter can mean a groomed white run, snow guns at work on cold nights and the village roofs dusted white below.

Spring arrives late. April highs reach about 10 C (51 F), with nights close to freezing at 2 C (35 F), and the last machine-made snow melts off the run in patches. Summer is mild, with highs of 20 to 22 C (68 to 71 F) and lows of 11 to 13 C (52 to 55 F). June to August is also the wettest stretch, at about 100 to 110 millimeters (4 inches) a month, so low cloud can hide the far ridges. Autumn brings green turf, yellowing trees between the houses and often grey skies, with October highs near 11 C (52 F) and lows around 5 C (41 F).

Things to Do Near Ceske Petrovice

The ski area keeps working after the snow goes. In summer the resort offers tubing on the slope, an outdoor trampoline, a downhill go-kart track and a rope swing. In winter, cross-country skiers can use the Adam circuit, a groomed loop linking Mladkov, Ceske Petrovice and Pastviny; the resort looks after 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) of it.

About 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) northwest of the village, the Zemska brana nature reserve follows the Divoka Orlice river through a narrow, wooded valley, and the Jirasek Trail runs through it on its way into the mountains. A single-arch stone bridge at the start of the gorge was built between 1901 and 1903 by Czech and Italian stonemasons. The Pastviny reservoir lies about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to the southwest, behind a stone dam built between 1933 and 1938. For a long view, Suchy vrch, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) to the southeast, rises to 995 meters (3,264 feet). Its mushroom-shaped lookout tower began as a water tower in 1931 and 1932, stands 33 meters (108 feet) tall and has 130 steps up to a platform 22 meters (72 feet) above the ground, with the Kramarova chata mountain hut just below the summit. Farther afield are the Hanicka fortress near Rokytnice v Orlickych horach, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) to the northwest, and the Hora Matky Bozi pilgrimage site above Kraliky, about 13 kilometers (8 miles) to the east.
