About this webcam
The Stockton Diamond Train Webcam is a PTZ railcam at the spot where two major freight railroads cross each other at grade, just south of downtown Stockton, California. Union Pacific’s Fresno Subdivision cuts straight across BNSF’s Stockton Subdivision here on a diamond, where the rails of both lines meet on the same level with no switch between them. In the view captured for this page, the camera looks across a couple of tracks and a gravel work area lined with stacked concrete ties to a long freight of covered hoppers with Union Pacific locomotives at one end, signals on tall masts, a signal bridge and power lines strung overhead. Because the camera can pan and zoom, the framing shifts as trains come and go. SouthWest RailCams estimates 40 to 60 trains a day across this crossing.
About the Stockton Diamond
The diamond lies near Aurora Street South and East Scotts Avenue, where milepost 84.7 of the Union Pacific Fresno Subdivision meets milepost 1120.7 of the BNSF Stockton Subdivision, according to SouthWest RailCams. On a crossing like this one railroad’s train has to wait while the other holds the diamond, and the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission, which leads the grade separation project, describes it as the busiest and most congested rail bottleneck in California. Passenger trains cross too. Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) commuter trains begin their run to San Jose at Robert J. Cabral Station, about 1.2 kilometers (0.7 miles) north of the diamond in a straight line, and Amtrak’s Gold Runner, known as the San Joaquins until a rebrand in November 2025, also runs through.
That arrangement is due to change. The Stockton Diamond Grade Separation project will carry the Union Pacific line on a flyover about 9 meters (30 feet) above the BNSF tracks, on a new alignment just east of the existing mainlines, so the two railroads stop sharing the crossing. The commission put the cost at about 237 million dollars in 2021 terms, and its project website gives a construction window from June 2024 to summer 2027. Freight is only part of the case: the separation is also meant to help ACE and the Amtrak trains run on time.
The camera is hosted by Geiger Manufacturing, a long-established Stockton business, and the operator dates the stream to June 2023. It carries railroad radio as well as pictures. The left channel plays the BNSF road frequency, 160.650 MHz, and its maintenance-of-way channel, 161.010 MHz, while the right channel plays the Union Pacific road frequency, 161.550 MHz, so radio calls between crews and dispatchers can be heard alongside the picture. Stockton itself was founded in 1849 by Charles Maria Weber, sits only 4 meters (13 feet) above sea level on the San Joaquin River, and counted 320,804 residents at the 2020 census.
Weather and Climate in Stockton
Stockton has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate on the edge of semi-arid, and nearly 95 percent of its rain falls between October and April. That leaves summer skies over the crossing clear for long stretches. July highs average 95 F (35 C), and nights cool to about 61 F (16 C). Autumn stays warm, with October highs near 80 F (27 C) and lows around 51 F (10 C).
Winter is mild and damper. January averages 57 F (14 C) by day and 39 F (4 C) at night, and on some winter days tule fog settles over the area, which can soften the signals and hide an approaching train until it is close. Spring warms quickly, with April highs near 75 F (24 C) and lows around 47 F (9 C).
Things to Do Near the Stockton Diamond
Downtown Stockton starts a short way north of the crossing. Robert J. Cabral Station on East Channel Street is where to ride the rails yourself: ACE trains leave from here for San Jose, and Gold Runner trains between Sacramento and Bakersfield stop here too, while Gold Runner trains on the Oakland to Bakersfield route use the separate San Joaquin Street station. Banner Island Ballpark, a 5,000-seat stadium in downtown Stockton, is about 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) from the diamond. The Bob Hope Theatre, built in 1930 as one of several movie palaces in the Central Valley, is downtown as well, as is Weber Point, the site of the first permanent residence built in the Gold Rush town.
A little farther out, the Haggin Museum, a fine arts and history museum built in Victory Park in 1931, is about 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) from the crossing. University of the Pacific, chartered in 1851 and the oldest university in California, has its campus in the city, and Stockton Arena hosts sports teams and touring entertainers. The Port of Stockton, modernized in 1933, connects the city to the sea through a deepwater shipping channel.
